AdBlue® Storage: What You Need to Know
What’s AdBlue®?
AdBlue® is a name that most of us are familiar with these days. It’s a solution added to diesel to reduce levels of nitrous oxide released into the atmosphere. With worldwide governments pledging to meet ambitious cuts in emissions by 2050, it’s a fuel additive that’s becoming increasingly common.
Organisations that use diesel vehicles and high volumes of fuel need a reliable, safe and effective storage solution for AdBlue®. This means selecting and installing a tank that meets the fluid’s unique storage requirements.
Storing AdBlue®
AdBlue® isn’t considered very hazardous, which means that there aren’t the huge amount of storage regulations that surround other liquids, such as diesel or petrol. In fact, there are currently no enforced storage regulations although there is guidance from the Environment Agency.
However, although not hazardous, the urea in AdBlue® can cause pollution to groundwater. It’s also corrosive to some materials. This means that it’s important to avoid spillages and leaks. AdBlue® can also degrade when it’s not stored at the right temperature or in the right conditions. Maintaining the right storage environment for your AdBlue® ensures purity and provides optimum performance.
Storing AdBlue®safely and correctly:
- Store AdBlue® in a bunded (double-skinned) tank to prevent leaks
- Your tank, pipework and dispenser equipment must be suitable for use with urea
- Use a trigger nozzle with an auto-shut off to dispense, such as this one
- Only use tanks designed specifically for AdBlue® storage
- Check that the tanks you use comply with manufacturing standards and are robust in construction
- Store AdBlue® at a temperature between 0-30 degrees C, protect from freezing and don’t place your storage tanks in direct sunlight
- Your dispensing area drainage should be isolated from any surface water drains
- Keep the correct equipment on site to deal with large and small spills. Take a look at our spill kits
What AdBlue® storage tanks are available?
Atlantis Tanks offers a range of PortaFuel and StoraFuel tanks suitable for the transportation and storage of AdBlue® diesel additive.
Portable Trollis
This range of small (100 litre), plastic, portable trollis gets your AdBlue® exactly where you need it – hassle free. With complete ADR exemption as described in section 1.1.3.1c of the ADR standard, these portable tanks can be used for the transportation of AdBlue® on UK highways.
Portable Pollicubes
For transporting larger volumes of AdBlue®, check out our popular Pollicube range. These larger tanks can also be used for the transportation of AdBlue® on UK highways and come in sizes between 230 – 440 litres.
Static AdBlue® Storage Tanks
We manufacture a range of polyethylene AdBlue® bunded storage tanks in capacities from 1,300 to 10,000 litres. These tanks are available with dispensing equipment or can be used as holding tanks.
Why Store AdBlue® On Site?
If you use diesel vehicles frequently, storing AdBlue® on site has several benefits:
- The convenience of on site dispensing
- Larger tanks make bulk purchasing possible when prices are low
- Less driver and operative downtime due to off site visits
- Reduced impact of any AdBlue® shortages, such as seen in 2021
- You can ensure your AdBlue® is of a reliable quality by maintaining good storage conditions
- Many vehicles that use AdBlue® have a mechanism that prevents the engine from starting if there is not a permissible quantity of AdBlue®. Having your own AdBlue® tank means less chance of delays and problems due to this issue
