An Offcert number is something that is provided by Oftec to its member’s tanks that have passed specific testing procedures. However, Oftec (the Oil Fired Technical Association) has no testing facilities themselves; the testing is done by others.
We do not have Offcert numbers simply because we are not an Oftec member. We do, however, use the same testing facilities for our tanks and they all have test certificate numbers.
On all our domestic steel oil storage tanks, there is a spare 2″ female port that is suitable to receive this device. It can be fitted both before installation and/or afterward. The main points to consider are:
1) The spare female port is towards the rear of the tank instead of at the front.
2) A special tool is required to fit this into a steel tank. This can be found on our website – search for AC.OFSTEEL.FT.
Copper Pipe comes in either bare or white coated and is available in 8, 10 or 15mm diameter (10mm being the most common). White plastic coated is preferred as the plastic protects the pipe from damage and corrosion. Sometimes on bigger diameters, the colour can change to yellow, which is still fine to use.
The pipe is available in either a 25 or 50 mt roll. The copper is annealed (soft) and needs an insert when used with a compression fitting. It can also be used with a ‘flared’ fitting due to its soft nature. Any underground connections must be positioned inside an inspection chamber. Pipework laid underground should be laid according to building regulations standards.
Qual Pipe is a plastic pipe that is approved by Oftec for underground use only. As soon as this pipe comes above ground, it must change back to Copper for fire protection reasons. As with all pipework, any underground joints must be in a suitable chamber that can be accessed for later inspections.
As Qual Pipe is plastic, it must be used with a brass insert when used with standard compression fittings. It is available in 10 or 15mm diameter however, it is becoming increasingly rare to be able to source Qual Pipe, fittings, inserts etc.
Yes. Normally, however, it would be good to install the panel right adjacent to or on the tank base.
We supply 3mt long metal U section ‘Unistrut’ lengths which are ideal for us as a supporting post for the firewall panel. These posts can be concreted into the ground on the tank side of the panel. The panels are then secured to these posts by screwing into the panel from the tank side (through the Unistrut post). How many are required will be decided by the installer and would be site dependent on wind loading, ground conditions and size of the panel; as a guide, we would suggest every 1.5 mt there should be a supporting post.
We strongly suggest that you contact your local fuel distributor who will be able to provide advice on how best to remove it. However the tank sponge that we supply would be a recommended solution. This product can be viewed here. Once placed inside the tank, it can absorb 0.7l of water from your tank.
No. However, please note that all Atlantis Tanks Group’s oil storage tanks, are compatible to have electronic or other types of manual gauge fitted. This negates the requirement for a sight gauge to be fitted.

No. The pumps and ancillary equipment fitted to these tanks are only suitable for use with diesel or biodiesel, as per product specifications. Dispensing a non-approved fuel from this equipment could result in serious injury or death.
Diesel (D) to British Standard BS2869. Additionally, they are suitable for the storage and dispensing of biodiesel with a bio-element of up to 8% concentration.
A thirteen amp, single phase mains power supply with a residual current device (RCD) fitted at the connection point to the power supply. All mains electrical installations must only be undertaken by a qualified electrician and must be inspected and tested regularly in accordance with statutory requirements.
Kerosene (C1/C2), agricultural fuel oil (A2), diesel (D) and water.
The tiger loop is self priming.
The tiger loop is a de-aeration device which removes air from the fuel prior to combustion. The result is a cleaner, more efficient burn with reduced emissions and enhanced cold weather performance.
Additionally, the tiger loop permits the tank to be positioned lower than the burner and up to 30 metres away. Therefore, when connected to a pressure jet burner, it is ideal for top outlet bunded tank installations and eliminates the need for an undesirable return line. Please note that tiger loops are unsuitable for use with installations incorporating a vaporising burner.
No. For advice on how to dispose of petrol and any other similarly dangerous liquids, please contact your local authority.
This is perfectly normal and is simply the fuel venting through the weatherproof vent fitted to the oil tank.
No. Today, no openings (other than the tank outlet) are permitted below the maximum level of fuel in any oil tank. This reduces the risk of accidental spillage. In the event that contaminants (e.g. water) need to be removed from an oil tank, they should be removed by an appropriately licensed contractor via the inspection aperture fitted to the tank.
Yes. Every oil tank sold by Atlantis Tanks Group is manufactured from a material which incorporates UV inhibitors. These prevent UV rays from permeating the structure of the tank, thus preventing fuel degradation.
All plastic oil tanks must be installed on a flat, level and fire resistant base capable of supporting the weight of the tank when fully laden. If concrete slabs are used, they should be a minimum of 50mm thick. The base should extend at least 300mm beyond the widest points of the tank and fully support the base of the tank in its entirety. Piers are not suitable for this purpose and can cause irreparable damage to the tank.
Most tanks supplied by Atlantis Tanks Group are manufactured from Medium Density Polyethylene (MDPE) – a material that has excellent chemical and impact resistance properties.
Oil storage tanks should never be installed in a habitable area. If installed internally, they should always be contained within an enclosed chamber. Detailed requirements exist for internal oil storage installations. For more information contact your local Building Control Officer or OFTEC.
Oil tanks with a nominal capacity not exceeding 3,500 litres should not be fitted any closer than 1.8 metres to a non-fire rated (30 minute minimum fire resistance) wall or eaves. Where these clearances cannot be achieved, the measures noted in British Standard BS5410 and OFTEC Technical Instruction Book 3 must be provided – i.e. the provision of a 30 minute (minimum) fire resistant wall which extends at least 300mm above and beyond the ends of the oil tank. It will be necessary to protect exposed eaves forming part of a roof within 1.8 metres of the top of an oil tank to provide a minimum of 30 minutes fire resistance. Cladding can be applied to the eaves in order to prevent fire from spreading to the roof.
For oil tanks with a capacity of 3,500 litres or greater, please contact your local Building Control Officer or OFTEC.
Oil tanks with a nominal capacity of less than 3,500 litres should not be placed within 1.8 metres of a flu outlet. Where these distances cannot be achieved, the protection measures noted in OFTEC Technical Instruction Book 3 and British Standard BS5410 must be provided by means of a 30 minute fire resistant wall which extends a minimum of 300mm above and beyond the ends of the tank. For oil tanks with a nominal capacity of 3,500 litres or greater, please contact your local Building Control Officer or OFTEC.
If the oil tank has a nominal capacity of less than 3,500 litres, it should not be placed any closer than 760mm to a boundary. This assumes that there are no flu outlets or buildings between the tank and the boundary. Where these distances cannot be achieved, the protection measures noted in OFTEC Technical Instruction Book 3 and British Standard BS5410 must be provided by means of a 30 minute fire resistant wall which extends a minimum of 300mm above and beyond the ends of the oil tank. For oil tanks with a nominal capacity of 3,500 litres or greater, please contact your local Building Control Officer or OFTEC.
A bunded tank consists of a ‘tank within a tank’. In the event of a spillage, surplus liquid collects in the outer tank (or ‘bund’), thus averting a pollution incident. Bunded tanks are now required at commercial, industrial, institutional and most domestic premises.
A single skin oil tank consists of a single container in which the fuel is stored. Unlike bunded oil tanks and bunded fuel tanks, single skin oil tanks incorporate no secondary containment. In the event of a spill, a pollution incident occurs.
Single skin oil tanks are not suitable for the storage of fuel at commercial, industrial or institutional premises, or at domestic installations with an installed capacity of over 2,500 litres – unless installed within a suitably bunded area.
For all other installations, an Oil Tank Risk Assessment must be undertaken by a competent person prior to installation and in accordance with the requirements of OFTEC Technical Instruction Book 3. In anticipation of possible future regulations, serious consideration should be given to fitting a bunded tank, even where a single skin tank may currently suffice.
Call us immediately on 020 8914 8914 (24 hours) and we will arrange for someone to pump it out. We will also give you advice on how to stem the flow to minimise any pollution.
No, in fact many installers prefer you to have at least 500 litres of fuel in your old tank as this ensures they can bleed through the pipework to the boiler. This allows them to check the connections. If you run the tank right down, sludge may also be drawn into the pipework and pump on the boiler which can result in costly repair bills.
We use a company that is licensed by the Environment Agency as a waste carrier, which means they can legally transport the tank to a licensed waste disposal site. There are a number of licensed sites. They use ‘duty of care’ paperwork to ensure compliance with the waste regulations.
For commercial situations, all storage tanks over 200 litres in capacity need to have secondary containment or be bunded. However, not all domestic oil tanks need to be bunded. When an OFTEC technician quotes for replacing/installing your tank, they carry out an OFTEC TI/133D risk assessment to determine if you are legally required to have a bunded tank fitted.
Using an OFTEC registered technician ensures all work is carried out to the relevant standards and that you are kept up-to-date with any changes in legislation.
