Yattendon Estates Diesel Storage: 30,000 Litre StoraFUEL Dispenser
High-Capacity Fuel Storage with Integrated Dispensing Equipment
Atlantis Tanks completed this 30,000 litre diesel dispenser project for a UK estate. The StoraFUEL steel bunded tank combined high-capacity storage with secure filling, filtration, fuel monitoring and metered dispensing.
The project also included a spring-rewind hose reel and a planned delivery using a third-party HIAB vehicle. This brought the equipment and delivery requirements together within one coordinated specification.
Inside the 30,000 Litre Diesel Dispenser
Measuring 6,000 mm long, 2,500 mm wide and 2,500 mm high, the tank was configured as a complete storage and dispensing system.
The specification included:
- Capacity: 30,000 litres
- Material: S275JR steel
- Construction: Internal tank bracing
- Standard stated on the specification: BS 799-5
- Secondary containment: Outer tank forming a bund with 110% stated capacity
- Support: Full-width bearers
- Lifting provision: Four lifting eyes for use while empty
- Finish: Holly Bush Green, BS 14 C 39
- Warranty: 10-year tank warranty, subject to the applicable terms
The tank formed part of the Atlantis StoraFUEL range, which includes steel and plastic tanks for static fuel storage and dispensing.
Secure Filling and Everyday Access
The tank featured a front-mounted security cabinet with a lockable swing door. This kept the main filling and dispensing components together within a protected but accessible area.
Inside the cabinet, the configuration included:
- A 2-inch fill point
- Lever ball valve
- Non-return valve
- Drip tray
- 1.5-inch pump feed
- Dedicated tank and bund sockets
- Separate tank and bund venting arrangements
The cabinet also housed the principal dispensing equipment, helping to keep the working area organised and reducing unnecessary exposure of the fittings.
Filtered and Metered Fuel Dispensing
A 230 V PIUSI Panther diesel pump formed the centre of the dispensing package. Rated at 72 litres per minute, it provided a practical dispensing rate for the completed high-capacity system.
The pump package also incorporated:
- Water and particle filtration
- Flow meter
- Automatic shut-off nozzle
- Six-metre dispensing hose
Filtering the fuel before dispensing helps reduce the risk of water and particles reaching the equipment being refuelled. Meanwhile, the flow meter allows the operator to monitor the quantity dispensed.
A PIUSI automatic spring-rewind hose reel was supplied with a 10-metre diesel delivery hose and a 1.5-metre anti-static whip hose. The reel keeps the longer delivery hose stored more neatly when it is not in use.
Monitoring, Security and Secondary Containment
A hydrostatic contents gauge was included to provide a clear indication of the available fuel. The battery-powered overfill alarm provides an additional warning during filling.
The outer tank forms a secondary containment bund with a stated capacity equal to 110% of the stored liquid.
For qualifying business oil storage in England, GOV.UK oil storage guidance states that fixed tanks require secondary containment. It also states that a bund for a single container must hold 110% of the container’s capacity.
The final installation remains subject to correct siting, foundations, pipework, access arrangements and operation by the responsible parties.
The specification also included a pre-serviced powder fire extinguisher and a 15-litre spill kit. These items provide useful equipment close to the dispensing area but do not replace appropriate site procedures or risk assessments.
Protecting the Steelwork
Before coating, the steelwork received ST2 surface preparation. A Zinfos 340WS solvent-borne anti-corrosive coating system was then applied.
The coating was specified at a wet-film thickness of 150 microns and a dry-film thickness of 75 microns. Holly Bush Green was selected as the finished colour.
For tanks installed in marine or particularly corrosive environments, an alternative coating specification may be required.
Getting a Six-Metre Tank to Site
The tank’s six-metre length meant that transport and offloading formed an important part of the project planning.
Delivery was completed using a third-party vehicle equipped with a HIAB offloading facility. Full-width bearers and four lifting eyes for use while the tank was empty supported handling during delivery and positioning.
Including the offload method in the original specification helped ensure the delivery arrangement matched the dimensions and handling requirements of the tank.
Delivered as Planned
Atlantis Tanks successfully completed the project, including delivery of the 30,000 litre diesel dispenser using the planned HIAB arrangement.
The completed package brought together secure bulk diesel storage, secondary containment, filtration, monitoring, metered dispensing and hose management.
Each component had a practical role within the finished specification. This created a coordinated fuel storage and dispensing package rather than a tank supplied without the supporting equipment needed for regular use.
More Than Tank Capacity
A commercial diesel tank must do more than provide enough storage capacity.
The specification also needs to consider how fuel will be delivered, how the contents will be monitored, what dispensing rate is required and whether the hose can comfortably reach the intended vehicles or machinery.
Security, filtration, secondary containment and delivery access also need to be addressed before the tank reaches the site.
This project shows how these details can be incorporated into one specification, giving the customer a complete steel bunded diesel tank and dispensing package built around practical fuel handling.
