Croydon Hospital Diesel Storage: Deploying a Custom 5500L StoraFUEL System

Partnering with L C Jackson Ltd to Secure Critical Healthcare Backup Power

Atlantis Tanks recently partnered with structural installation specialists L C Jackson Ltd. Together, our engineering teams delivered a high-performance healthcare backup solution. This project directly secures the vital Croydon Hospital diesel storage infrastructure. Specifically, we supplied a custom 5500 Litre Steel Bunded Oil/Diesel Tank from our premium StoraFUEL range. We engineered this high-integrity unit to safeguard emergency power reliability across the hospital’s clinical environments.

Custom 5500L steel bunded tank system for the Croydon Hospital diesel storage installation

Healthcare facilities demand absolute energy security to protect patient care systems during grid failures. Consequently, a dependable backup fuel reserve remains a primary requirement for modern hospital trust managers.

To satisfy this urgent need, we worked alongside Luke Jackson and the Kent-based team at L C Jackson Ltd. As a result, Atlantis Tanks delivered a fully certified, turnkey fuel management layout. This asset ensures constant operational readiness and absolute site security.

Engineering the Croydon Hospital Diesel Storage Tank

The backbone of this installation relies on a specialized, medium-capacity structural design. Specifically, the footprint optimizes space while meeting rigorous environmental safety criteria.

Verified Specifications & Capacity Metrics:

  • Nominal Capacity: 5547 Litres

  • Brimful Capacity: 5839 Litres

  • Useable Capacity (with Overfill Prevention): 5546 Litres

  • Outer Tank Dimensions: 2925mm (L) x 1500mm (W) x 2000mm (H) (including cabinet)

  • Inner Tank Dimensions: 2089mm (L) x 1414mm (W) x 1997mm (H)

  • Weight Profile: 1005 KG (Dry Weight) / 5793 KG (Estimated Wet Weight)

True industrial credibility depends on structural verification. Therefore, we manufactured this tank in strict accordance with BS799 Part 5 standards. We utilized high-grade S275JR steel and added comprehensive internal tank bracing. Furthermore, the outer tank forms a fully compliant secondary containment bund. This safety barrier easily holds 110% of the total stored liquid to prevent environmental pollution.

Advanced Fluid Automation and BMS Integration

Operating a critical healthcare network requires an uncompromising focus on digital control and system automation. Therefore, the StoraFUEL tank incorporates a 230V O.L.E C2020 Tank Gauge Kit. This device delivers an accurate, continuous electronic volume readout. The system features a 10m probe length with an impressive accuracy rating of +/-1%. Furthermore, a built-in 4-20mA output connects the tank gauge directly to the hospital’s central building management system (BMS).

Additionally, we installed a 230V 50LPM Duplex Pump and Control Panel assembly. This smart dual-pump layout features absolute mechanical redundancy. The panel communicates seamlessly with the client’s generator day tank float switches to automate critical fuel transfers. Simultaneously, an integrated float switch monitors the main tank compartment floor to detect internal fuel leaks immediately.

Fuel Conditioning and Precision Hardware Architecture

Stored diesel fuel degrades naturally over long periods of standby storage. To combat this issue, we integrated an advanced Fuel Recirculation Unit. This Italian-manufactured system utilizes a high-efficiency Piusi Panther Pump alongside a Purafiner magnetic fuel conditioner. Specifically, it employs a two-stage filtration path with a 30-micron water filter and a 5-micron particle filter. A programmable timer controls the operational cycles. As a result, the fuel remains entirely free from microbial contamination and water buildup.

Furthermore, the hardware layout features excellent security and operational design choices:

  • Roller Shutter Door: We equipped the full-size, 650mm deep front cabinet with a space-saving steel roller shutter. This choice maximizes technician workspace during delivery operations.

  • Overfill Prevention: An aluminum-bodied 2″ Overfill Limiter threads directly into a 2″ BSPP full socket. This safety component mechanically terminates fuel flow during bulk deliveries to avoid overfill accidents.

  • Flexible Suction Assembly: A removable 1.0″ x 2-metre flexible drop tube kit includes an integrated foot valve and strainer for clean extraction.

  • Double-Skin Pipework Entry: A specialized flange entry accommodates secure connection to the building’s infrastructure.

Complete Mechanical and Electrical Delivery

Atlantis Tanks manages complex installations from manufacturing to final site testing. For this project, our specialist engineering teams executed the complete mechanical installation and factory commissioning. Furthermore, our certified electricians handled all wiring tasks to strict 18th Edition standard compliance.

To eliminate transit risks, our logistics network managed the shipment via the Atlantis Delivery Service – StoraFUEL. Specifically, we utilized a specialized vehicle equipped with a heavy-duty HIAB offloading system. This approach allowed our operators to lift and place the multi-tonne asset safely onto its foundation pad. To ensure compliance with local guidelines, our installation adheres to the strict UK Government oil storage rules. Finally, we back this industrial configuration with our comprehensive 10-year tank warranty, delivering absolute confidence to the healthcare estate.
