Leeds Bradford Airport Fuel Infrastructure: Deploying a Custom 5000L StoraFUEL System

Partnering with J W Hinchliffe (Tanks) Ltd to Ensure Aviation Operational Readiness

Aviation facilities require absolute continuity across ground operations, emergency power systems, and airside logistics. Atlantis Tanks recently collaborated with industrial fuel specialists J W Hinchliffe (Tanks) Ltd to upgrade critical fuel reserves at Leeds Bradford Airport.

To support the airport’s backup power requirements, we manufactured and delivered a tailored 5000 Litre StoraFUEL bunded diesel tank.

Operating within a commercial airport demands adherence to strict safety and environmental standards. Consequently, our engineering team designed a low-profile, high-integrity fuel storage system engineered to fit specific site constraints while providing long-term structural reliability.

Engineering Specifications: 5000L StoraFUEL System

The unit was manufactured at our UK facility using structural S275JR carbon steel, built in strict compliance with BS799 Part 5 specifications and internal reinforcement bracing.

  • Nominal Capacity: 5,180 Litres

  • Brimful Capacity: 5,453 Litres

  • Useable Capacity (with Overfill Prevention): 5,087 Litres

  • Outer Tank Dimensions: 3300mm (L) x 1250mm (W) x 1500mm (H) (excluding bearers & fittings)

  • Inner Tank Dimensions: 3164mm (L) x 1164mm (W) x 1497mm (H)

  • Weight Metrics: 996 KG (Dry Weight) / 5,467 KG (Estimated Wet Weight)

  • Secondary Containment: 110% capacity secondary bund compliant with UK Government Oil Storage Regulations

  • Protective Finish: Zinfos 340WS high-performance anti-corrosive coating (BS 14 C 39 Holly Bush Green; 150-micron wet / 75-micron dry film thickness)

Custom Enclosure Architecture & Mechanical Features

Space efficiency and ease of maintenance were central to this airport installation. Rather than a full-height cabinet, the tank features a low-level front-mounted fill cabinet designed for easy access during tanker deliveries without obstructing line of sight on-site.

  • Low-Level Fill Cabinet: Fitted with a 2″ fill point complete with a drip cap, retaining chain, and an integrated 300mm x 200mm mounting plate for fuel level gauging.

  • Overfill Protection: Includes an aluminum 2″ mechanical Overfill Limiter threaded directly into a 2″ BSPP socket, preventing fluid loss during high-pressure bulk deliveries.

  • Cable & Piping Interfacing: Dual 1/2″ sockets positioned on the cabinet roof allow clean, weather-tight conduit routing for telemetry and monitoring cables.

  • Suction & Venting Hardware: Top-mounted 1″ suction point with internal standpipe, combined with dedicated 2″ vents for both the primary tank and secondary containment bund.

Turnkey Reliability for Critical Transportation Hubs

To ensure safe handling and accurate placement at the airport, the unit was fabricated on full-length steel mounting bearers with integrated lifting eyes for transport positioning. Every heavy-duty bunded diesel tank leaving our facility undergoes rigorous quality testing and comes backed by our 10-year tank warranty.

Through our partnership with J W Hinchliffe Ltd, Atlantis Tanks continues to deliver dependable, code-compliant fuel infrastructure across the UK’s aviation and transport sectors.
