Warwick Hospital Generator Fuel Storage: A 20,500-Litre Structural Slab Tank

Partnering to Secure Reliable On-Site Fuel Backup for Healthcare Continuity: Warwick Hospital Zone

Atlantis Tanks—through our specialist StoraFUEL brand—recently supported a critical emergency infrastructure project for the Warwick Hospital Zone. Partnering with leading generator specialists Dieselec Thistle Generators Limited, StoraFUEL delivered a bespoke 20,500-litre structural slab steel bunded fuel storage system. The engineering package included integrated automated duplex transfer pumps, continuous fuel polishing, and advanced BMS telemetry.

This project highlights our core expertise in supplying fully compliant, long-term bulk fuel storage solutions engineered specifically for healthcare environments and mission-critical commercial sites where uninterrupted emergency standby power is essential.

Healthcare environments demand total dependability. Equipment failure or fuel contamination during a mains power interruption is not an option. For the Warwick Hospital Zone project, StoraFUEL provided a turnkey, high-capacity fuel infrastructure package engineered to maintain clean, reliable standby fuel reserves while strictly adhering to UK pollution control and safety regulations.

Precision-Engineered Fuel Storage for Healthcare Resiliency

At the heart of the installation is the bespoke 20,500 Litre Steel Bunded Oil/Diesel Structural Slab Tank. Custom-fabricated for maximum long-term structural integrity and space efficiency, this low-profile slab design accommodates high-capacity fuel storage across a heavy-duty footprint.

Key Tank Specifications & Structural Engineering:
  • Dimensional Profile: Outer tank dimensions measure L 10,025mm × W 3,850mm × H 625mm (excluding top fittings and bearers); Inner tank dimensions measure L 9,600mm × W 3,621mm × H 620mm.

  • Capacity Capabilities: Brimful capacity of 21,124 litres with a nominal operating capacity of 20,596 litres.

  • Weight Profile: Dry weight of approximately 9,132 kg, expanding to a full wet operating weight of approximately 26,454 kg.

  • Industrial Compliance: Manufactured from high-grade structural steel conforming to BS EN 10025-2:2004 S275JR standards, reinforced internally with 3 structural universal beams to prevent flex under full hydraulic load.

  • 110% Secondary Containment: The outer tank acts as a 110% capacity secondary bund, meeting all UK Control of Pollution guidelines and environmental compliance standards.

  • Mounting & Handling: Built on full-width support bearers for even weight distribution across concrete bases, fitted with heavy-duty lifting eyes for safe site positioning, and equipped with a bund lip around the manway hatch with a dedicated leak detection probe port.

  • Tank Connections: Configured with a 2″ fill point on the manway hatch inside the container, custom connection plates, and tailored tank connections designed directly to project engineering drawings.

Automated Fuel Transfer, Conditioning, and Telemetry

To ensure seamless integration with the healthcare facility’s standby power generators, the storage unit was outfitted with an automated pumping, polishing, and monitoring apparatus:

1. Duplex Fuel Transfer System

  • 230V 50LPM Duplex Pump & Control Panel: Features dual 230V centrifugal pumps capable of flow rates up to 50 litres per minute.

  • Automated Day Tank Replenishment: Integrates directly with client generator day tank and belly tank float switches for automated fuel transfer on demand.

  • Control & Redundancy: Includes a 240V alternating pump set control panel with Hand/Auto modes, alarm auto/test switches, audible and visual indicators, pump float switches, and switched BMS outputs (Pump 1 Tripped, Pump 2 Tripped, Power Failure, Common Alarm).

2. High-Efficiency Fuel Polishing System

  • 230V 50LPM Fuel Polisher: Prevents fuel degradation, particulate accumulation, and microbial growth (“diesel bug”) during long standby periods.

  • ISO Compliance: Maintains stored fuel to ISO 4406:2017 standards (18/16/13 particle count and under 200ppm water content).

  • Two-Stage Filtration: Incorporates a 10-micron particulate/water retention filter combined with a 3-micron absolute particulate filter, visual blockage pop-up indicators, self-priming liquid ring pump, and stainless steel pipe fittings.

  • Scheduled Maintenance: Controlled via a 240V panel featuring a 7-day multi-function timer and dedicated BMS status outputs.

3. Precision Tank Gauging & Security

  • 230V O.L.E C2020 Gauge Kit: Features an IP55-rated weatherproof enclosure, backlit digital display, ±1% accuracy, continuous reading in litres and percentage bar, and a 4–20mA output for full Building Management System (BMS) integration.

  • High-Level & Bund Alarms: Includes a 6m probe kit for immediate containment breach detection.

Engineered for Environmental Endurance

To protect against atmospheric corrosion and maintain visual standards in commercial environments, StoraFUEL applied a high-performance surface coating:

  • Surface Preparation: Mechanically prepped prior to coating.

  • Coating System: Applied with Zinfos 340 WS solvent-borne, high-performance anti-corrosive primer and a mid-sheen self-priming topcoat (50% gloss).

  • Thickness & Finish: Applied to 150 microns wet / 75 microns dry film thickness, finished in RAL 7042 Traffic Grey.

Mechanical Installation & Professional Delivery

StoraFUEL oversaw both factory commissioning and logistics for this critical project:

  • Full Mechanical Installation: Comprehensive factory fitting of all two major tank sub-assemblies, pressure testing, backplate mounting for control panels, Unistrut fixings, and flexible pipe connections prior to site dispatch.

  • Specialist Offloading: Delivered directly to the site via a dedicated vehicle equipped with an integrated HIAB crane facility, allowing precise offloading adjacent to the installation pad.

Delivering Confidence Through Engineering Excellence
