5 Reasons why Steel Diesel Tanks Make Sense

Fuel Tanks – Plastic or Steel?

If you’re deciding whether to use a steel or plastic diesel tank to store your fuel, there are various things to consider. Both types of tank do a good job, but each is suited to different needs and circumstances.

Let’s have a look at 5 reasons why you might choose to use a steel diesel tank rather than one made of plastic:

  1. They’re robust and they last a long time – Fuel tanks with a steel construction outlast plastic tanks. They can last 20 years + with minimal but regular maintenance. Steel tanks are also less likely to be damaged by other equipment, knocks and accidents. If damage occurs, it’s far easier to fix a steel tank than it is to fix a plastic tank. A plastic tank very often needs totally replaced if it’s damaged.
  2. They’re cost effective – Due to their longevity and low maintenance requirements, steel tanks are more cost-effective over time. The upfront purchase price is often higher than that of a plastic tank but, in the long-run, you’ll make savings.
  3. They prevent fuel theft – Fuel theft is an increasing problem throughout the UK. Thieves are opportunists and will usually go for a theft that’s quick and easy. This means that plastic tanks are targeted more than steel fuel tanks. Plastic tanks can be easily penetrated and the fuel simply drained out. Steel tanks, particularly bunded steel tanks, take far more effort and time to penetrate, hence your fuel is far safer.
  4. They’re recyclable – Steel is 100% recyclable and old steel tanks can be easily disposed of in a way that doesn’t cause harm to the environment. Plastic tanks have a bigger environmental footprint due to their manufacturing process and the difficulty of effective recycling.
  5. They’re less likely to suffer large leaks – A damaged plastic tank often completely fails and can lose a large quantity of fuel very quickly. That’s bad news for your pocket and even worse news for the environment. A steel tank’s walls are less likely to be damaged and also less likely to fail catastrophically, therefore leaks tend to be smaller.
  6. They can be aesthetically pleasing – Ok, we know that fuel tanks don’t usually lend themselves to winning beauty contests, but a steel tank is, arguably, more attractive than a plastic tank. It can be painted to blend in with the environment or, if you’re creative, painted to stand out! There are various colours of paint available. Painting not only makes the tank look good, it also protects it from corrosion.
  7. They can be custom made – We know that sometimes our customers need a steel diesel tank of a size, shape or configuration that isn’t available as standard. That’s why we offer a bespoke tank manufacturing service. We can design and create a steel tank with a capacity of up to 100,000 litres in a shape to suit your unique requirements.
