When critical urban infrastructure and high-profile commercial facilities face mains power interruptions, immediate standby power is vital. Atlantis Tanks—through our specialist StoraFUEL brand—recently delivered a complete bulk fuel storage and management infrastructure package for Bells Power Group Ltd at their Liverpool Street project site in Erith.

Engineered to support mission-critical generator systems, this project required high-capacity standby fuel reserves, automated fuel conditioning, and continuous Building Management System (BMS) integration. By combining two custom-built steel bunded fuel tanks with high-efficiency polishing and monitoring apparatus, StoraFUEL provided a resilient, fully compliant solution built for long-term operational integrity.

Bespoke Dual-Tank Engineering & Specifications

To optimize storage capacity and satisfy site space requirements, the project utilized a dual-tank configuration comprising a 3,600-litre steel bunded tank linked via balance flange connections to a 5,200-litre steel bunded tank.

1. 3,600-Litre Steel Bunded Fuel Tank

• Dimensional Profile: Outer tank measures L 2,000mm × W 1,500mm × H 1,500mm; inner tank measures L 1,870mm × W 1,460mm × H 1,497mm.

• Capacity Capabilities: Brimful capacity of 4,041 litres, nominal capacity of 3,839 litres, and a useable capacity (with overfill prevention valve) of 3,634 litres.

• Weight Profile: Dry weight of approximately 756 kg, expanding to a full wet weight of approximately 4,070 kg.

2. 5,200-Litre Steel Bunded Fuel Tank

• Dimensional Profile: Outer tank measures L 2,150mm × W 2,000mm × H 1,500mm; inner tank measures L 2,020mm × W 1,960mm × H 1,497mm.

• Capacity Capabilities: Brimful capacity of 5,868 litres, nominal capacity of 5,574 litres, and a useable capacity (with overfill prevention valve) of 5,277 litres.

• Weight Profile: Dry weight of approximately 957 kg, expanding to a full wet weight of approximately 5,768 kg.

Shared Structural & Environmental Compliance Standards

• Industrial Compliance: Both tanks are manufactured in accordance with BS799 pt5 with internal bracing using high-grade structural steel conforming to BS EN 10025-2:2004 S275JR standards.

• 110% Secondary Containment: The outer tanks form an integrated secondary bund providing 110% capacity of the total liquid stored, strictly adhering to UK environmental pollution guidelines.

• Tank Fittings & Interconnection: Each unit includes a 610mm manway hatch, 2″ fill point with drip cap & chain, tank/bund vents, top feed and return connections for generator supply, bottom outlet with internal isolation valve & T-bar handle, and a DN100 PN16 balance flange connection for inter-tank fuel balancing.

• Handling & Support: Built on full-width support bearers for load distribution and fitted with lifting eyes for empty tank positioning.

Automated Fuel Conditioning, Telemetry, and Protection

Standby fuel that sits stagnant for extended periods is vulnerable to contamination, oxidation, and microbial growth (“diesel bug”). To maintain optimal fuel quality and operational readiness, StoraFUEL equipped the system with advanced management hardware:

Environmental Protection Finish & Site Logistics

To shield the steel structures against corrosion and weather exposure in demanding environments, both tanks underwent comprehensive surface preparation and coating application:

• Surface Preparation: Mechanically prepped to ST2 standards.

• Coating System: Coated with Zinfos 340 WS solvent-borne anti-corrosive primer and a mid-sheen self-priming topcoat (50% gloss).

• Film Thickness & Finish: Applied to 150 microns wet / 75 microns dry film thickness, finished in distinctive Saddle Brown (06 C 39).

• Factory Fitting & Dispatch: All polishing equipment, control panels, pipe fittings, and telemetry systems were factory-mounted and tested prior to site delivery via Atlantis Delivery Service.
